坦桑石是为纪念当时新成立的坦桑尼亚共和国,就以其出产国命名了。又因为它的颜色就像坦桑尼亚黄昏的天空,又可称作“月泉石”。国际上将坦桑石品质由高到低分为SD、D、4A、3A、2A、A六个等级,到目前为止,全世界的坦桑石都诞生在坦桑尼亚的阿鲁沙市附近的区域里。

橄榄石是一种古老的宝石品种,古埃及人在公元1000多年前就用它做饰物,将其称为“黄昏祖母绿”,古罗马人认为橄榄石具有太阳一般的神奇力量,可以驱除邪恶,降妖伏魔,给人类带来光明和希望,把它称为“太阳的宝石”。橄榄石的颜色范围从纯绿色、黄绿色至褐黄色,其中以纯绿色为最佳色彩,以黄绿色橄榄石最为常见。当铁离子含量越多,橄榄石的颜色也就越深。
